It has been a busy week in the Mentor Mom household (lest you hadn't noticed the decrease in new posts). Besides a trip to the Binder Park Zoo, I have been busy with date nights with each of the kids. I don't know about you, but as well as Thing One and Thing Two play together for the most part, there are still times when they need a break from each other. Seeing that we are almost mid-summer, the time seemed right for some one on one time with me and a much needed break with their sibling.
So Thing One and I, both being huge Harry Potter fans, went to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. All I can say is wow! My son and I REALLY enjoyed it. This film really focuses on Harry and his trying to figure out the connection between himself and he who shall not be named. It is definitely a much darker film than the first four. Harry is tormented in his dreams by the dark lord who is attempting to invade his mind. Is Harry strong enough to fight him off or is he destined to join forces with him?
Violence: There are some rather intense wand fights and the death of one character which may be disturbing to some children.
Sexual Innuendo: Harry FINALLY kisses Cho. That's pretty much it. There was a cute moment afterward where Harry discusses the kiss with Ron and Hermoine which really brought home the point that despite being wizards and witches in training, they are still adolescents trying to figure out the nuances of crushes and relationships with the opposite sex.
Strong Language: Very little if any. Ron may have had one "bloody hell" during the film which was quite a relief given this seemed to be his response to EVERYTHING in the last four movies.
Creepy Factor: Lots of creepiness, e.g., lots of dark characters and dementors. Let's put it this way, there was enough creepiness that Thing One, age 9, was unable to go to sleep and ended up sleeping with the lights on all night. Of course, I should add that he is one of those kids with a HUGE imagination who gets totally consumed by movies.
Scary Images: Lots, e.g., death, friends in peril, creepy characters, etc.
Final Tally: This is definitely not a movie that you would want to bring young kids to due to the scary images and creepy factors. It is rated PG-13 which is probably a good thing to keep parents from bringing very young kids to the film. I wouldn't recommend this film for kids under the age of nine. The film is the shortest one so far and seemed to have the most laughs. My son and I really enjoyed how Harry and the other students rallied together in this film. There were some great messages about choices, friendship and acceptance and understand of those who on the surface seem different from us. I give it four star!
