I had a "date" with my son today while his sister is up with grandma and grandpa. I decided to surprise him with a movie. I had heard great things about "Monster House" so we decided to give it a go. Thought I'd do a Mentor Mom review.
I thought the movie was great. More importantly, Thing One (who is 8 years old) thoroughly enjoyed it. Having read some written reviews, it was my understanding that the movie was slightly scary. The written reviews were right on. This movie made both of us jump several times. I would NOT recommend this movie for children under the age of 8! Very dialog driven, younger kids might have a difficult time following it (besides having the crap scared out of them). There are lots of spooky images to boot.
The animation was outstanding. It was clever, smart and well written. What do you expect with Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg as producers? Given that the events in the movie transpire on Halloween, this is destined to become a holiday classic.
Hope you find this review helpful. There's nothing worse than taking your kids to a movie only to find out it is over their head or not what you expected. I always find input from other parents a better gauge as to whether a flick is appropriate for my kids.
FYI I will do a quick review on the movie "Barnyard" tomorrow (my date with Thing Two). Until next time!
