I have been fortunate enough to receive a copy of the book Sanity Savers: Tips for Women to Live a Balanced Life by Dr. Dale Atkins for review by BlogHer. Some of you may know Dr. Dale from the Today show where she is a frequent guest expert.
Regular readers know that I am ALWAYS looking for tips and strategies to maintain that delicate balance that we, as women, struggle with. This book differs from many of the others that tackle this subject. It is not a step-by-step guide, i.e., "do A, B and C and all your problems will be solved." Instead, it is broken up into what Dr. Dale describes as the "Five S's": Self; Support; Surroundings; Stimulation; and Savor which she believes are essential for women of any age to have in order to maintain balance.
One of the things that I liked about the book is the way it is set up. There is a reading for each day of the week, e.g., Monday, Tuesday, etc., as well as the weekend. The chapters are very short with most being only one page making it easy to fit a quick read in every day. The book is quite large in it's scope as it addresses a number of different topics such as caring for a partner with chronic illness, finding time to exercise, buying your own home as a single woman, and the like. Each chapter is labeled according to the topic discussed which include midlife, parenting, friendships, work, well being, single and the like.
Given the fact that the book covers so many topics, not all will be of interest to every reader. Despite this, the book offers a cornucopia of information on topics pertinent to women. The entries are short, to the point and offer quick and concise information for the reader to ponder. As someone who works with families with children with developmental delays, I was particularly pleased to find so many entries that addressed being the parent of a special needs child.
Sanity Savers is a wonderful book that I will share with the women in my life. It is going to the top of my list of books to give to friends, relatives and families who are struggling. It will certainly be going with my daughter when she eventually leaves home! I have enjoyed reading the entries while sipping on a cup of coffee in the twilight of the morning. The entries motivate and empower and require me to slow down which is much needed. Thank you Dr. Dale for writing such and inspiring and enjoyable book! I highly recommend it!
